COCOA, FL – The Brevard Schools Foundation will host Shop from the Heart, a giveaway event to benefit local homeless students, during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Nearly 100 homeless student liaison teachers in Brevard Public Schools are invited to the Supply Zone for Teachers on Wednesday, November 18th to receive free school supplies, hygiene kits, and clothing. The liaisons will then distribute these items to the homeless students at their schools.
More than 2,200 identified homeless children were enrolled in Brevard Public Schools during the 2013/14 school year. Many of these students are lacking basic items including coats, warm clothing, hygiene products, and school supplies. The Supply Zone hosts Shop from the Heart every semester in order to ensure that these children have the tools they need to learn and succeed in school.
In addition to receiving free supplies, teacher liaisons will also have the opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas, and meet with representatives from local support organizations including Students at Risk, Brevard Health Alliance, Crosswinds Youth Services, I am P.R.O.O.F., Project Prom Queen, Florida KidCare, the Department of Children and Families, Brevard Adult and Community Education, and Family Promise of Brevard.
Shop from the Heart has been made possible by the generosity of local businesses, organizations, and members of the community. Their financial and in-kind donations have enabled the Supply Zone to give away all supplies for free. The Supply Zone serves teachers and students all year long, though, so donations are always needed.
