Viera, FL — Eddy and Crystal Hanson are marking what would have been their daughter’s first year of school with a special donation to Brevard Schools Foundation. The Hanson’s, who lost their daughter, Avery, at six days old to SIDS, are donating the proceeds of their 5th Annual Avery’s Light Memorial Golf Tournament to the Foundation’s Supply Zone for Teachers to benefit children in the community who will not have the supplies needed to start the school year on the right track. The tournament raised $10,600 this year, which is the most in their tournament’s history thus far.
The Hanson family had been dreading Avery’s 5th birthday for the last couple of years noting that birthdays are always hard without her, and age five is a huge milestone. With Kindergarten starting in a couple of short months from now, they said they will miss having the opportunity to pick out her backpack or school supplies.
“Knowing that the proceeds from the golf tournament will directly benefit children in our community is helping make this missed milestone a little easier to bear,” said Avery’s mother Crystal Hanson. “Instead of us missing sending our little girl to school ready to take on the world, we are humbled to know that we will be helping hundreds of children start off the year on the right track.”
The Supply Zone hosts an annual Back to School Giveaway Event at the end of July where the Hanson family will participate in handing out school supplies to children who will be starting Kindergarten. “We are so appreciative that the Hanson’s chose the Supply Zone as the beneficiary of their fundraising efforts,” said Janice Kershaw, President of the Brevard Schools Foundation. “Avery’s light will continue to shine with each backpack we give out.”
Nearly 2,000 income qualified children will receive the supplies provided through the school supply drives and fundraisers held throughout the community. Brevard Schools Foundation is the nonprofit organization that supports Brevard Public Schools through a variety of programs geared at supporting innovation, engaging communities, and changing lives.
