We are excited to announce that we are one of the Florida education foundations receiving part of the $131,000 grant from Florida Power & Light to EmPOWER STEM Educators with knowledge of effective math and science instructional practices that align with Florida Standards through classroom-based, teacher-to-teacher learning this year!

Florida Power & Light Company recently awarded more than $13,100 to Brevard Schools Foundation as part of its statewide EmPOWERing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Educators Program. The funding will support the Brevard Schools Foundation’s “Increasing Science Literacy” project. With many teachers new to STEM education, teachers require mentoring for content knowledge and pedagogy.

Funding will support the third peer-to-peer learning project in Brevard Public Schools.  In 2016-2107, one Brevard Elementary School piloted a model with one coordinating teacher, 4 lead teachers and 8 observing teachers impacting one school site and approximately 300 students. The program allowed for one observation and debrief per teacher.FPL

The second project duplicated the format but expanded it from elementary to K-12 and from one school site to district wide with a STEM focus.  The most recent project affected approximately 55 teachers and approximately 5,000 students. This project allowed for multiple observation sessions and debrief sessions.

The recently funded program will complement the previous models and continue to impact K-12 teachers and maintain he STEM focus. An additional 22 more teachers and approximately 2,000 additional students will be affected. The program will continue to allow for multiple observation and debrief sessions but also allows multiple observing teachers to work with lead teachers for further collaboration among peers and to reestablish the peer-to-peer professional relationships lost due to COVID-19.
