For the sixth year, the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (Consortium) and Volunteer Florida teamed up to surprise a local volunteer with the “Excellence in Volunteerism” award. Dana Morgan was recently selected from among 14,000 local education foundation volunteers throughout Florida as the recipient of the Volunteer Florida “Excellence in Volunteerism” Award.

“Local education foundation board members and volunteer leaders are often behind-the-scenes unsung heroes who are helping to raise funds and provide targeted support for students, teachers, and schools in their community,” said Mary Chance, President of the Consortium.  “Each of them understands how much a strong public school system means to their community.  It is so gratifying to be able to give special recognition to one each year through our partnership with Volunteer Florida.”

An eight-year volunteer with the Brevard Schools Foundation, Dana has provided dedicated service through the foundation’s free teacher supply store – coming in 2-3 times a week to ensure inventory is accurate and books are properly categorized. During COVID, she was even found using her own vehicle to host outdoor book fairs and drive supply donations directly to schools. Volunteer Florida CEO Josie Tomayo joined in the surprise presentation, recognizing Dana for her selfless work for Brevard County teachers, students, and schools.

“There are many volunteers who dedicate time, money, and talent, but Dana really led our organization through some challenging times and has set us up for long-term sustainability and success,” said Brevard Schools Foundation President Janice Kershaw.  “She dug in with the hard work when there was a staffing shortage in the supply store, she stepped up to not only fill the role of Coordinator to ensure store operations continued for classrooms in need, but she onboarded and trained the new coordinator when they were hired.”
